First Edition Cycling News

I guess as people who follow cycling we are a bit tired of hearing a ball by ball description of a second rate cricket match when at the same time there are some great cycling events," he continued. "You can't change the world in one go but Scotty was really frustrated at times at the lack of recognition the sport received."

The event's success follows on from the successful running of a fundraising dinner for the Scott Peoples Foundation last month, which was attended by Tour de France runner-up Cadel Evans (Predictor-Lotto). Evans joined fellow Australian Tour riders Simon Gerrans and Brett Lancaster in donating jerseys for auctioning off on the night.

"One of the things that helped make our race a success was the support from Cadel Evans," said Furphy. "We raised $20,000 that night and much of it was due to his generosity with his time - awesome bloke."

The team behind Scotty's Race is now hoping to continue the momentum it's gathered to make the event an annual race.

Senator Feingold Charts Course

It's the No. 1 domestic issue that's brought up at the town meetings. Lindsay Graham, who's a senator from South Carolina, and I have come together on a proposal. I support universal health care for all Americans. He doesn't, necessarily. But we agree that we ought to have a commission that allows three or four states to win a competition to become pilot projects to show their vision of how they can move toward universal coverage in their state.

For some, it might be a single-payer state, it might be an employer coalition, co-op type of approach. He says health savings accounts; I'm skeptical of it. But the idea is that we would actually have some evidence on the ground of what works and what doesn't.

This has all been a theoretical debate since, God knows, Harry Truman.

Cooking cause of DeBordieu fire

Authorities have ruled unattended cooking caused a fire that destroyed a home in the DeBordieu community near Pawleys Island Tuesday night, according to a Wednesday statement from Midway Fire Rescue.

Firefighters were dispatched to the structure fire at 2981 Luvan Blvd. at 8:20 p.m. to find the closest fire hydrant was not working, reports Midway Fire spokesman Lt. Bob Beebe. As a result, crews laid 1,800 feet of hose to access the next-closest hydrant.

Beebe reports the home did not have a sprinkler system, which would likely have minimized the damage.

The malfunctioning hydrant was possibly damaged in a traffic crash on Friday, Beebe reports, and was to remain in temporary service until it could be completely repaired.

A crew began to repair the hydrant on Tuesday, but emergency repairs to a broken water line nearby interrupted the work and the crew marked the hydrant as being out of service, according to Beebe's statement.
