Moments later, after a lengthy response that didn't directly answer Hora's question, the prosecutor said, "Great. Let me try one more time."

Hora and Ramon began haggling over the color of the sleeping bag that Ramon said he had slept in in 2001. It could be yellow versus brown, blue or royal blue or purple. Hora showed on the screen pictures of the sleeping bag found in the Honda CRX used by his son, but Ramon said those pictures were different from the ones he'd been shown at the preliminary hearing.

"I didn't show you any pictures at the preliminary hearing because I wasn't the prosecutor at the preliminary hearing, is that right?" Hora said sternly.

Ramon smiled and agreed. (Prosecutor Greg Dolge handled the prelim).

"We stipulate," defense attorney William Du Bois joked.

Red velvet cake emits the perfect level of flavor and chocolate

The association between Valentine's Day and food has forever been chocolate: chocolate truffles, chocolate mousse, chocolate fondue, chocolate cake. It all makes so much sense.

Chocolate, of course, is a natural mood enhancer, an aphrodisiac, a flavor of love; and there is certainly no doubt that chocolate is the primary comfort food of cold weather. It is silky, sweet and so satisfyingly rich that just a few bites of chocolate in its pure essence can assuage even the most stubborn sweet tooth.

But there are times -- dare I say it -- when there can be a chocolate overload. Too much chocolate might sound like a good thing, but it may be more enjoyable to tease your palate with just a hint of this enchanting substance.

Red velvet cake can do the job. This famed unidentifiable flavor of cake emits the perfect amount of cocoa.

LaVell Edwards: A world-class warrior

That he treats co-workers so well they never want to leave his side? That he can't drive either a golf ball or a car in a straight line? That he does goofy things, such as attend the wrong funeral? That he expected to get fired during most of his career? That he's the finest man you'll ever meet, one who has moved through life without making an enemy, even in the intense world of football? That no one can ever remember anyone saying a bad thing about him, which works out well since no one can remember his saying a bad thing about anyone, either? That, despite success and fame and a healthy income, he has lived in the same modest rambler for 33 years? That one of his real passions is music, and that he has this thing for "Amazing Grace," which could describe the way he has moved through the world? That those who work with him believe he has some mystical power to control the weather? That, of all the things you could say about him, the best is that his wife and three children gush on and on about him? Write a story about LaVell Edwards? We'd better get started .

Bond woes delay port's bid for state funds

A niche corner of the municipal bond market known as auction-rate securities already is causing huge headaches and interest rate shock for schools and governments as the downgrading of bond insurers cause investor confidence to plummet. The Associated Press on Friday reported regulators were intervening in the $300 billion auction-rate securities market from which investors in recent weeks have shied away. The bonds underlying the securities arent considered at risk of default, according to the report. But, periodically, banks and other financial institutions decide interest rates based on the auctions where buyers lately have been scarce. Rising interest rates on the short-term debt are squeezing such municipalities as Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which saw payments jump $300,000, according to reports. Some U.S.

MythBusters: 7 Tech Headaches—and How to Fix Them

That's why, as machines become more complicated, good interface design becomes more essential—you can't just keep adding buttons and menus. The iPhone is a good example. To combine several machines into a pocket-size device, Apple did away with almost all the buttons in favor of a touchscreen that can be reconfigured for each new application. Personally, I have no use for anything fancier than a basic cellphone, but the iPhone is smart technology. Here are some prime examples of technology that's not smart. Instead, it ranges from mildly annoying to knuckle-gnawing infuriating. But since our show, like Popular Mechanics magazine, is about problem solving, we've included the MythBusters fix for some of this misguided machinery. .

It's kava time!

Sure enough, all the signs were there. We loaded her into the car & hoped we could catch this one in time.

The AEUC in Bakersfield is a wonderful clinic for overnight emergency situations. Of course, the whole drive down there & spent in the waiting room was the worst Deja Vu for me. It was exactly like that awful night seven years ago when we had to make the decision to let Tasha, our first Akita, go. It happens so fast, and so slow.

But we got better news this time: the Vet, Dr. Osten, was much more confident with the surgical option available. Aki had a torn spleen, so that had to go, but there's just a small area of compromised tissue to worry about & no signs of an underlying cause, like cancer. We drove her to Tehachapi Vet Hospital this morning, & they're monitoring her heart & vitals today to see how she progresses.
