The writing is on the wall when officialdom overlooks profanity

This is why every year I join the backpackers and tourists for a day on the beach at Bondi.

Bondi is far from Sydney's most beautiful beach, but it is the most famous. It is an Aussie icon, known throughout the world. So as family and friends back in Britain shiver through the misery of another winter, I send them emails and text messages from Bondi telling them how hot the sun is, and how big the waves are. Some of them refuse to talk to me for months afterwards.

This time round I got down there early on a beautiful day, parked the car on the esplanade and headed for the beach. And then I saw it, spray-painted on the sea wall in vividly coloured letters a metre high: "F--- OFF BACKPACKERS".

Graffiti like this is obviously juvenile, and we generally just ignore it.

January 2008

A bowl of ice cream seemed like the best option, especially since all my ice cream would probably melt by the time power was restored. Actually, according to FEMA, if your power comes back on after the food in the freezer has started to thaw, use a thermometer to check the freezer's temperature. As long as it is no higher than 40 degrees, the food is safe.

And then magically, the power was back on as suddenly as it had disappeared. I didn't waste time. Within minutes, my dishwasher, dryer and washing machine were happily sucking up all that great electricity. I went around resetting clocks and cable boxes. And for once, I was actually very grateful for the energy I usually take for granted. To mark the occasion, I tossed Lucy an extra biscuit. And rewarded myself with extra ice cream, even if it was still under 40 degrees in the freezer.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Joel Ortiz Off Aftermath? Is Bow Wow Crazy? Amy ...

Wow Bow doesn't have to do this. He doesn't. He can still make his name Bow Wow again. The rumor is that he got pissed off at Chris Brown and spit on his R&B counterpart. That's word to Omarion! Anyway apparently at a show in Dallas, Wow Bow ended his set off and accused Brown of messing up his set. How? I'm not sure how. Chris Brown is the headliner of the show, but I don't know what he did. Anyway, Wow Bow had to be restrained and out came the spit. I know this is only a rumor, but I have to ask: IS WOW BOW CRAZY?

Now that I got a good laugh out of that, you should know that Wow Bow has stated on the record that this never happened. Chris Brown hasn't issued any denial.

OBAMA HAS A SHOT!

OK, I know one doesn't have anything to do with the other, but I thought I would say this anyway.

Big pants save the day

A family home was saved from burning down when a pair of giant knickers were used to put out a fire.

Jenny Marsey's size 18-20 cotton pants were grabbed to cover a frying pan fire at her home in Hartlepool.

Her son and nephew were trying to fry some bread when the blaze broke out, reports the BBC.

They grabbed the knickers from a pile of washing, doused them in water, and threw them over the fire.

Mrs Marsey, 53, said: "My 4.99 parachute knickers have come in handy for something. We've had a good laugh that they were a bit like a fire blanket."

Her son John and his cousin Darren, 23, were cooking, when they went to answer a knock at the door, only to return to a blazing kitchen.

Mrs Marsey said: "When they found the pan on fire they did what most people do and panicked.

What's Cooking: Latke vs. hamentash

You'd think, after nine years, they'd have settled this thing. The annual Latke-Hamentash Debate convenes for the 10th time at 7:15 p.m. March 2 at the Coffman Union Theater, 300 Washington St. SE. on the East Bank of the University of Minnesota. The latke, or potato pancake, is traditionally served on Hanukkah. The hamentash, a triangular pastry, is traditionally served on Purim. The debate as to which is the superior food originated in 1946 and lightheartedly follows the Jewish practice of kidding teachers and mimicking rabbinical tradition during Purim. The debate is sponsored by Hillel, the university's Jewish Student Center. Admission is $5, free for students. A reception with latkes and hamentashen will follow. Donors of $50 or more per person will be invited to a pre-debate light dinner with the panelists at 5:30 p.m.

Almond cakes are just right for a Lenten dessert

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Place the almonds on a baking sheet and place in the oven to toast for 5 minutes.

Meanwhile, in a large bowl combine the flour, sugar, cinnamon and orange zest.

When the almonds are done, remove them from the oven and transfer to a food processor. Pulse until the almonds are coarsely ground. Add the almonds to the flour mixture.

Add the water and mix to form a very stiff dough. Add additional flour or water to get a tacky, but not sticky, dough. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead several times.

Form the dough into a log, then flatten to form a 6-by-18-inch rectangle. Use a knife to cut the rectangle into 1 1/2-by-6-inch bars. Carefully transfer the bars to the prepared baking sheet, leaving about 1/2 inch between them.
